Episode 129 - Curling

On the way to curling practice selfie

On the way to curling practice selfie

So Jon has decided to join the school's curling team.  So yesterday he had his first practice.  This seemed excellent fodder for a Jonathan Files report.

We also talked about some other stuff on the way to his school bus stop this morning.  Jon seems to be enjoying high school and he has met a lot of new people.

His most recent movie idea is a religious epic!

Episode 128 - Jon Reviews The Martian

Jon and I went to the movies today and saw 'The Martian'.  It has received rave reviews and neither of us were disappointed.

We recorded this one on the bus on the way back from the movie.

Jon also got a hair cut today which is always exciting.

Apparently high school consists of going to vending machines and the cafeteria.

Episode 126 - Jon Reviews Hotel Transylvania 2

As is his custom, Jon went to a movie this weekend.  This time it was Hotel Transylvania 2.  Listen in to find out what he thought of it, what trailers he saw, and you know, standard Jon stuff.

We also of course talked a bit about other things.  I really don't know what though as I am pre writing this post......

(I'm going to meet him at the bus stop in like 15 minutes....)

Episode 125 - And That Was the Week That Was

Jon and I were going to go for a bike ride, but the back tire on the tandem is flat, so we went for a walk instead.

Today we talked about Jon's week at school, about the upcoming federal election and of course about Jon's movie ideas.

Episode 124 - Jon Reviews No Escape

Well the first week of high school is in the can so Jon is back at his normal schedule.  Yup, he's got a movie to review.

On the weekend Jon saw 'No Escape'.  It is getting mixed reviews from other non Jonathan reviewers but Jonno loved it.

You'll have to listen in to get a sense of what he gave it out of five....

Episode 122 - High School

Jon started high school today.  As I dropped him off I asked if he wanted me to come in with him to help him find stuff, his response was 'don't worry Dad, I got this" which made me pretty damned proud.

So, on the way home (it was a half day today) we recorded some.  Jon is, to say the least, rather nonchalant about the whole deal.  I wish to hell I could have had that attitude when I started high school....

Episode 121 - Jon Reviews the Man From UNCLE

Yeah I know there are supposed to be periods after each letter in UNCLE, I just didn't feel like typing them.

So Jon went and saw the Man from UNCLE and really liked it.  It is actually getting pretty good reviews, so his rating (five out of five) is not ridiculous.

He then told us about his various movie ideas.

Oddly, he asked if he could climb on to the roof of the house.  I figure this would be a bad idea.

Episode 120 - Jon Reviews Pixels

Well, I just got back from the Marshall McLuhan Podcaster Roundtables, where I met a few Jonathan Files fans, and Jon, of course, had some time without his father which, well, if you know me, is probably a blessing....

Jon claims he did not stay up too late when I was gone, but I simply don't believe him.

So, Isabelle took Jon to see Pixels. Now I have heard nothing but bad things about this movie, but, Jon loved it.  You know, in a way that is Adam Sandler's business model, make crap that people like.

Episode 119 - Jon Reviews Spy

Jon went and saw Spy this weekend.  He loved it and gave it five our of five.  Now the time I didn't question him because critics are loving it.

He also was lucky enough to get a new poster for his room.  The people at the local theatre are really great that way, they save them for him.  This one is for the remake of Poltergeist, which he won't be seeing.

Episode 118 - The Gala

Last night our whole family went to the Convocation Gala.  So, we all got dressed up and ate mediocre food!  That said, we had a good time.  Now and then Jon had had just about enough of all of the movers and shakers of the Sault and had to go for a walk, so I went with him and this is the result.

Congrats Maddie!

Episode 115 - Cooking

So today Jon started a cooking class.  It was pretty cool and he met a couple of other kids.

They learned how to make lasagna roll ups, which were, well, I shouldn't have to explain this to you so I won't.  Anyway, there were two kinds of those, one with spinach and ricotta, which Jon liked ok, though he removed most of the spinach in his, and one with chicken and bacon.  He had two of those....

It is a great thing that autism Ontario put on, thanks to them.  The guy doing the instruction was really great as well.

Episode 113 - Jon Reviews the Longest Ride

So, while I was away at a conference Jon went to see The Longest Ride.

Jon describes it as a 'romantic drama' which sounds quite devoid of explosions.  Nonetheless, Jonathan gave it his standard score.

We talked a bit about his movie ideas as well of course.

Episode 112 - Jon Reviews Furious 7

As is often the case, Jon went to see a movie over the weekend.  Jon is sort of a the Leonard Maltin of Sault Ste. Marie, without the beard, though, he now shaves, so you know, I mean he could get a beard, but I digress.....

He rated it highly, out of five.

It is finally spring, and we got to walk to school today in 8 degree weather, rather than -10.

Episode 111 - Jon Reviews 'Get Hard'

So, over the weekend Jon went to see 'Get Hard', the Will Ferrel, Kevin Hart vehicle, with Isabelle. Fine by me as I am not a big fan.

Jon of course quite liked it.  I think he thinks it is the pinnacle of filmmaking.  Hey, its taste, you can't really argue taste, even if he is wrong.....

We also talked about the trailers he saw of course, and some of his new movie ideas.  He seems stuck on this 'Mission Failed' idea with Liam Neeson.

Anyway, happy Easter from us.

Episode 110 - Salt Flats

So Jon had a big day today, it was science fair day at his school.

All of the grade 8 kids presented their experiments/demonstrations, and Jon's was on Salt Flats.  He made his own salt flats out of salt and dirt and baking soda.  He did some really nice observations in his microscope of the salt flats as well.

He doesn't seem to care much, but says he got an A, which is pretty damned fine as far as I am concerned.

We then talked about some of the other projects, including one that was basically a 2 x 3 factorial design.  I think the kid should have used a factorial ANOVA to analyze his data, which illustrates why I am not an elementary school teacher.

Jon then regaled us with some of his movie ideas.

Way to go son, I am very proud of you.
